An educational, three dimensional astronomical apparatus was created for instructing students on how the phases of the moon, the lunar eclipses, the solar eclipses and the seasons are produced by the interaction among the sun, the earth and the moon. The system is enclosed in a dark box that contains models of the sun, the earth and the moon. A mechanism simulates the moon's rotation around the earth with its tilted orbit with respect to the ecliptic. Several lighting options and observation windows are provided; this way, depending on the classroom illumination and number of attending students, the demonstrator can easily make adjustments to achieve best results. The apparatus was designed in such innovative way that the inherent human learning processes, based on perception of depth and eye-hand coordination, were best stimulated. |
