PURPOSE:To attain a fast reference to a desired image information by storing a large amount of image information compared with a case where no compression is carried out and furthermore simplifying a developing means in comparison with a conventional compressing/storing device applying the modified Huffman rule. CONSTITUTION:An image information supply means 1 is provided together with a compression means 2, a storing means 3, a developing means 4 and an image information reference means 5. The means 2 converts the image information supplied from the means 1 into a compression code and stored in the means 3 in the form of the compressed image information. The compression code contains a control code, a short code and a long code, the long code is sometimes set at the >=2 byte length and the control code and the short code are always set at 1 byte. Then an end code, i.e., one of control codes is added to the end of the compressed image information. The control code includes a charging code, a divider, a repetitive divider and an end code. The charging code is not produced nor stored by the means 2 and neglected by the means 4.
