The invention relates to a pneumatic damping device with a damper housing (3) which, in its interior, has at least one gas-filled damping space (22). In the housing there is furthermore a piston (8) which forms a wall of the damping space (22) and can be displaced, thereby changing the volume of the said space. The piston (8) is connected to a piston rod (15) and either the rod or the damper housing (3) are supported and a movable mass which is to be damped can engage on the part which is unsupported. Outside the damping space, there is furthermore a regulating device (29) by means of which the amount of gas in the damping space (22) can be varied and set in a controlled manner in order to vary the damping properties of the damping device. <IMAGE>
