PURPOSE:To effectively produce flaky powder by quickly cooling and solidifying the molten drops of a molten metal formed by atomization splashing, conveying the splashed metallic powder by air flow and classifying the same to the flaky powder and granular powder by a difference in the conveying distance. CONSTITUTION:The molten metal in a crucible 1 placed in a powder producing chamber 14 is atomized and the fine molten drops thereof are quickly cooled and solidified by a water cooled rotating roll 6 and are splashed as the flaky powder 7. The splashed flaky powder 7 is conveyed by the air flow 16 admitted from an introducing pipe 15 into a classifying chamber 9. The flaky powder 7 contains the granular powder 17 and since the granular powder 17 is smaller in surface area than the flaky powder 7, the granular powder falls quickly by gravity. The flaky powder 7 and the granular powder 17 are, therefore, classified by partition plates 18 and are properly recovered by discharge hoppers 10 into recovering chambers 11, 12,13. The flow rate of the air flow in this stage is adjusted to about >=0.1m/sec.
