PURPOSE:To prevent the adverse effect of pressure variation due to the variation of a clearance on a film, by providing a space above the liquid surface of a coating solution sump using a coating device equipped with a doctor and hermetically sealing said space. CONSTITUTION:The coating solution 4 in the side opposed to a back-up roll 1 of a pan 3 receiving the coating solution 4 is contacted with a web 2 and moves onto the web by its viscosity with the rotation of the roll 1 to rise and, subsequently, the excessive solution is scraped off by the preset clearance between a bar (doctor) 5 and the web 2 and the coating solution 4 is applied to the web 2 in a desired thickness. Herein, by providing a space 9 above the liquid surface of the pan 3, the pressure variation due to the variation of the clearance is absorbed by the space 9 to prevent the disturbance of the formation of a film bead and, by hermetically sealing the space 9 by an extending peripheral wall, the evaporation of a solvent from the coating solution 4 can be prevented.
