PURPOSE:To increase the brightness at the relatively low applied voltage and improve the luminous efficiency by using the transient glow discharge region between the Townsend discharge region and the normal glow discharge region as the discharge region. CONSTITUTION:In the relation characteristic curve between the discharge maintaining voltage and discharge current, at the Townsend discharge region shown by a curve BC the operating current is low but the voltage is high and the brightness and luminous efficiency is low as shown in the conventional region (I) of two curves of the discharge current and brightness/luminous efficiency, thus an image of good quality can not be obtained. At the normal glow discharge region shown by a curve EF and the conventional region (III) the current is large but the luminous efficiency is low. At the transient glow discharge region shown by a curve CDE and the region (II) an image having high brightness and good luminous efficiency can be obtained with the relatively low voltage.
