PURPOSE:To obtain an easily usable system omitting switching operation by providing an endoscope system with a light source capable of emitting white light and face sequential light, an endoscope to be connected and a means for discriminating a video processor and radiating white light or face sequential light in accordance with a unit to be connected. CONSTITUTION:Lamps 31a, 31b are switchable and connection tools 71a', 71b', 72' of an image pickup device body 101 are common with that of a device to be connected. When a face sequential type endoscope 2 is connected, a type signal is generated from a type signal generating circuit 27A. The signal is discriminated by a discriminator 28 on the body 101 side, a switch 103 is controlled so as to be switched to the face sequential side and a driver 26a drives a CCD 18. A read signal is processed by a face sequential type processing circuit 41a or a mosaic type processing circuit 41b and converted into a video signal of AN NTSC type through an output circuit 80 and the video signal is outputted from a common terminal 46 or a three-primary signal is outputted from a common terminal 43. Since a usable signal processing system and a usable output light are automatically selected in accordance with the kind of the endoscope 2 to be connected in said constitution, the optical system can be easily used.
