PURPOSE:To enable a level to be accurately measured and an operation to be automated by constructing a level measuring instrument capable of level measuring and breaking a bridging above a particulate storage part of its holding apparatus. CONSTITUTION:When a level is to be measured, a wire ascending/descending speed adjusting mechanism 5 is set to a measuring descent side, a wire 1 is hung down by a wire ascent/descent driver 9 at a low speed, a weight 2 is brought into contact with the level 3 and change in the tension of the wire 1 is detected by a level detector 8 where by the level 3 is measured. Since whether thus measured level 3 is the value at a time when a bridging phenomenon is generated or not is unknown, after the wire 1 is hung up by the wire ascent/descent driver 9 by a suitable amount, the wire ascending/descending speed adjusting mechanism 5 is changed-over to a high speed descending side to hang down the wire 1 at a high speed and the weight 2 is made to collide against the level 3. Thus, the bridging 10 is broken little by little by the weight 2 whereby the correct level 3 can be measured and the whole processes can be automated.
