In order to reduce the friction between a cam (4) and its bearing surface (6), a closing spring arrangement (5) is assigned to a valve (2) of an internal combustion engine, which spring arrangement, in a parallel force connection, contains a mechanical closing spring (8), designed for the return force requirements of a lower engine speed range, and a pneumatic closing spring with a pneumatic pressure chamber (11), which, within the lower engine speed range, is connected by way of a ventilation passage (13) to the atmosphere, but to a pneumatic pressure source (20) above the said engine speed range (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
