In the prodn. of a coated ion exchange membrane for electrolysis, the surface of the membrane is roughened by ion etching and then it is coated with a substance having slight electrochemical activity.. Pref. the membrane is etched to a depth of 0.1-20 microns and is given a smooth, 0.05-5 microns thick coating with C, graphite, Pt, Sn oxde, Ti oxide or Ta oxide, pref. by vacuum sputtering.
