An article, for example a pulley, incorporating a cylinder and a flange is formed by forging between two punches in a shaped die. Metal flows from a blank simultaneously in two directions, longitudinally to form the cylinder, and radially outwards to form the flange. Elongation occurs without reverse flow from either die chamber into the blank. One of the punches is of smaller dia. than the blank, and the other larger. The internal dia. of the shaped die is larger than the outer dia. of the smaller punch with an annular recess at an end to receive the end of the larger punch.
