PURPOSE: To favorobly select the moment ignition voltage pulse is generated and limit the level of generated voltage pulse simply and reliably by connecting a voltage-subordinate resistance in series to a voltage-subordinate capacitor of an ignition circuit. CONSTITUTION: A discharge lamp 2 is structured so that an ignition circuit 10 and a discharge vessel 3 for performing electric discharge between electrodes 4 and 5 through rigid conductors 40 and 50 are installed in an outer bulb 30 having a lamp cap 31. The circuit 10 comprises a fuse 7, voltage-subordinate capacitor 8 and voltage-subordinate resistance 9, generates ignition voltage pulses for starting by a circuit including a stabilizing ballast 1 through lamp contacts C and D of the cap 31, and applies a voltage on the electrodes 4 and 5 of the discharge lamp. The resistance 9 limits the level of the voltage pulse by its resistance characteristic and adjusts the moment voltage pulse is generated. It is possible to break the ignition circuit effectively in an operating state of the discharge lamp.
