4-[2-[Bis[(R)- beta -hydroxy-3-chlorophenethyl]amino]ethyl]- phenoxyethanol and physiologically tolerable salts thereof have catabolic action and can be used for the treatment of obesity, diabetes and conditions which are associated with increased protein degradation, or as a feed additive for fattening animals. They are prepared starting from the phenol corresponding to the abovementioned ester.
