Upon malfunction of an elevator 1A, 1B in a multi-car (eg two) car elevator system, the positions of the two elevator cars 1A, 1B are determined by comparing the current output of a rotary encoder associated with each car with the stored value obtained when each car was at a reference position eg the lowest floor. The speed of the rescue elevator is then controlled in dependence upon its position relative to the malfunctioning elevator car. Each encoder 8A, 8B is connected to the power supply and position determining means 9A, 9B of the other car so that the position of the malfunctioning car can be determined even during a power failure. Power consumption is reduced since only the reference positions need to be stored. <IMAGE> |
