A power converter unit for use in a railway vehicle includes a heat receiving block 7 with a cooling fin 4 on one side and a plurality of semiconductor modules 108a-c, 109a-c, 110a-c on the other side, each of the semiconductor modules having a plurality of switching devices (e.g. IGBT, MOSFET) and being arranged such that the longitudinal direction 30 of the modules is oriented parallel to a direction of cooling air 40. A filter capacitor for smoothing is electrically connected to the semiconductor modules and a gate driver G/D for transmitting a control signal to the switching devices is arranged at a position below the semiconductor modules. The semiconductor module of each AC phase may be arranged in a lateral direction with a plurality of parallel modules of each phase arranged vertically and perpendicular to the flow direction of the cooling air. The filter capacitor may be arranged on a projection plane of the heat receiving block, and terminals of the filter capacitor may be arranged at one side or both sides of the capacitor and arranged in the same direction as, or perpendicular to, the direction of the cooling air. |
