A printing apparatus including a print head 118 for transferring ink from a ribbon 124 to a substrate 122 to be printed and a print roller 120 for guiding the substrate 122; wherein a print head angle θ is subtended between the print head 118 and a radius of the print roller at the contact point E of the print head 116 and roller 120. The print head angle θ may be adjustable without changing the location of the contact point on the print roller 120; the contact point may be maintained at the top dead centre of the print roller 120. A method of changing the effective length of a print head by adjusting a print head angle is also disclosed.
