A method for the detection of ions by combining ion mobility spectrometry with photo detachment spectroscopy. Disclosed is also a device for carrying out the method according to the invention. The method and the device solve the problem of false positive detection of ions and provide a higher selectivity and greater sensitivity. The method and the device can be used for the detection of volatile organic compounds, chemical warfare agents, illicit drugs, toxic industrial compounds and explosives.
