<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographing apparatus capable of providing excellent image data of both a subject and a background even under lighting conditions of backlight, excessive follow light, etc. <P>SOLUTION: A subject is detected from a frame F(i) to generate a luminance histogram of a subject area (S1 to S5). When ≥20% of a luminance distribution of the subject is not within an intermediate luminance range, a luminance histogram of a background area is generated, then exposure control to optimize the luminance distribution of the subject area is performed and a next frame F(i+1) is saved (S5→S8 to S11). Depending on whether the luminance distribution of the subject area is unevenly distributed on a low-luminance range or a high-luminance range, exposure control to optimize the luminance distribution of the background area is performed and a next frame F(i+2) is saved (S12 to S15).
