A rear passenger protecting air bag system is provided to protect passengers on a front seat and a rear seat by blocking the space formed between the front seat and the rear seat through an air bag such that the passenger on the rear seat is prevented from moving in a forward direction in the case of vehicle collision. A rear passenger protecting air bag system includes an air bag module(2), a carpet(1), and a door(3). The air bag module is equipped with an air bag cushion(4) which is inflated by an inflator for discharging gas in accordance with the control signal output from an air bag control unit. The carpet is arranged to cover the air bag module built in a floor(F) of a vehicle, and has a tear line(1a) for opening the air bag cushion in accordance with the operation of the inflator. The door is accommodated in an opening(1b) of the carpet, and covers the air bag module. The door has a tear line(3a) for opening the air bag cushion.
