A method of processing frames of video data, in which data for one or more frames in a sequence of video frames is defined with respect to a reference frame, comprises: when all or part of a reference frame for a sequence of video frames is to be used when decoding the sequence of video frames: generating and storing in memory pixel data representing all or part of the reference frame at a first resolution; and generating and storing in memory pixel data representing all or part of the reference frame at at least one different (e.g. display-based) resolution to the first resolution (detail level). Thus different resolution reference frames are provided and stored. A video processing unit (VPU) 32 and one or more display processing units 34, 35 are provided, all having access to external memory 33. VPU 32 generates and stores in memory 33 pixel data representing reference frames for the sequence of video frames at the full resolution L0 of the reference frame and also at at least one lower resolution L1, L2; reference frames may be represented by a mipmap set. |
