The invention concerns a telecommunications system and a data transfer method, a sending unit and a receiving unit in a data transfer system. For resending of a faulty data packet, the system uses an ARQ mechanism, which entails combination of the originally sent version and the resent version of the data packet. In conjunction with each resending, outband signalling information is transferred from the sender to the receiver, distinctly indicating when the first sending of the data packet took place, so that the receiver can combine the data packet's resent version with a previous version. The outband signalling information can indicate the exact time or the physical position when the data packet's original version was sent. <IMAGE>
