PURPOSE: An apparatus for transmitting caption information is provided to express any image data as caption information by synthesizing a main video and an OSD video re-composed with respect to characters read from a font ROM through decoding of character codes. CONSTITUTION: A microcomputer(7) receives data notifying of the end of an image unit transmission, stops an operation of a sampler(20), and outputs a video signal of an image stored in a RAM(4) to an NTSC encoder(21). The NTSC encoder(21) receives and encodes the video signal line by line from the RAM(4) and then outputs a signal converted into an image-added video signal to a VCD IC(6). The microcomputer(7) controls the VCD IC(6) to output the image-added video signal of the NTSC encoder(21) instead of a main video signal of a video processing part(8).
