A mobile device is provided having a smart card. The smart card is powered by the mobile device and a maximum power supply value is defined by the mobile device to control the power drawn by the smart card. Provision is made for the smart card or the mobile device to renegotiate the maximum power supply level for the smart card without having to reset the mobile device. This provides the mobile device with dynamic control of the power drawn by the smart card, which can help the mobile device to optimize the power saving management.

1. A smart card operable with a mobile device, comprising:
an interface for interfacing with the mobile device; and a processor operable at power up to output an Answer To Reset (ATR) signal to the mobile device, which ATR signal includes a parameter indicating whether or not the smart card can renegotiate a maximum power supply value previously defined by the mobile device and operable to receive a Terminal Capabilities signal from the mobile device indicating whether or not the mobile device can renegotiate said maximum power supply value.
