<p>The system for protecting vehicle occupants from side impacts comprises a side panel (2) which takes the impact. One panel part is located at a predetermined body height, such as that of the pelvis. This panel pivots around a horizontal axis, in the zone connecting the side panel and the vehicle roof, at the moment of impact. The pivoting zone comprises a side panel reinforcing strut (9) and rigid frame (10) and a flexible connection (15) between the side panel and the roof. The pivoting zone also comprises a weakened zone (13) in the vehicle structure at the level of the lower part of the side panel. The side panel has a door (8) which is supported against a vehicle central base (11). The roof is reinforced by a cross member (14) which is connected to the central base through a thinned zone (15) which allows their relative pivoting.</p> |
