The invention relates to a device for improving the stability of a step ladder 1 or the like and is of the type comprising at least one movable stabilising foot 5 capable of being locked when set on the ground. The stabilising foot 5 comprises a bent tube 6 whose free end 7 reaches down to the ground and a collar 9 fixed to the other end 8 of the bent tube 6 where it slides on a vertical post 2 of the step ladder 1. The collar 9 can be locked by friction on the vertical post 2 when the free end 7 is set on the ground. The stabilising foot 5 is secured in the rest position on a member 3a, 3b of the step ladder 1 by a stud 11a, 11b engaging with the free end 7 of the bent tube 6. In the working position the stabilising foot 5 is secured in a predetermined horizontal direction. <IMAGE>
