PURPOSE:To prepare formed coal which has high strength and hardness and emits no foul odor, by adding pitch having a high softening point and coal tar to a raw material coal, drying the mixt. at normal temp. and forming it into shape under pressure at a low circumferential speed in a double-roll forming machine. CONSTITUTION:10-15% pitch and having a softening point of 100-300 deg.C and 4-8% coal tar are added to a raw material coal. The mixt. is kneaded at normal temp. without steam heating and is formed into shape under pressure at a circumferential roll speed of 0.35m/sec or lower in a double-roll forming machine. The formed coal emits no foul odor, for kneading is done without steam heating and a proper combination of the amt. of the binder and the circumferential speed of the roll of the forming machine produces formed coal with high strength and hardness.
