A selective printer includes a solid state switching device formed of Ovshinsky material 11 any part of which, when a laser beam is directed thereon, can be transformed from a high resistive state to a low resistive state in which sufficient current is permitted to pass to permit a character forming mosaic 12 to cause printing on paper 14. As shown, the paper 14 is electrolytic paper. The character forming mosaic may be formed as the outer surface of a drum (Fig. 2, not shown), a layer of Ovshinsky material and a layer of conductive glass being arranged concentrically within the character forming mosaic layer. The laser beam source is then positioned at the centre of the drum, a portion of the character forming mosaic being energized by the laser activating the Ovshinsky material at a writing position (21), printing taking place at a printing position (22) and the Ovshinsky material being de-activated at an erase position (25), during rotation of the drum. |
