Electrophotographic material carrying a photoconductive - polymer layer containing a carbonium salt as sensitiser

The photoconductive polymer may be poly(N-vinylcarbazole), poly(3, 6-dibromo-N-vinyl carbazole), brominated poly(N-vinyl carbazole), polyacenaphthene and/or polyvinylanthracene. The carbonium slat sensitiser has the general formula: R1C+(R2)R3 anion- (I) where R1-3 = aromatic grp such as styryl, 2-methoxystyryl, 4-methoxystyryl- or omega-phenylbutadienyl group., a phenyl or 4-biphenyl grp., an alkoxyphenyl grp., a phenoxyphenyl grp., a naphthyl grp or an alkoxy naphthyl grp., an anthryl-, alkoxyanthryl-, phenanthryl phenanthryl- or alkoxyphenanthryl grp., and "anion" = fluoroborate, chloride, iodide, perchlorate, chloroferrate or chlorozincate. Polymer and sensitiser (100 pts: 0.01-3 pts) are dissolved in a suitable solvent (e.g. benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, dioxan, dichloroethane, etc), opt. together with plasticisers and/or org. colloids, to increase strength and flexibility of the film (e.g. chlorinated biphenyl) dimethylphthalate, octyl, phthalate, polyvinylacetal, phenolic resins etc.) and applied to a carrier su ch as aluminium plates, paper, etc. The plates are useful in known electrophotographic processes, e.g. the plate is subject to a cornoa discharge, exposed to an image-forming light source, developed with a powder developer and heated to fuse the toner powder. Optimum exposure is much lower in the pres. of the sensitiser.
