摘要 Various systems and methods are described for configuring a data storage system. In one embodiment, a plurality of actual capacities of a plurality of storage devices of the data storage system are identified and divided into a plurality of capacity slices. The plurality of capacity slices are combined into a plurality of chunks of capacity slices, each having a combination of characteristics of the underlying physical storage devices. The chunks of capacity slices are then mapped to a plurality of logical storage devices. A group of the plurality of logical storage devices is then organized into a redundant array of logical storage devices.

A method of configuring a data storage system, the method comprising: determining an actual capacity of a plurality of physical storage devices, the plurality of physical storage devices having at least a set of different storage characteristics; pooling address spaces of the plurality of physical storage devices; dividing the pool of address spaces into a plurality of capacity slices based on the determined actual capacities of each of the plurality of physical storage devices; determining one or more storage requirements for a node in the data storage system; combining, using a processor, at least some of the plurality of capacity slices into one or more chunks based at least in part on the one or more storage requirements, the one or more chunks composed of capacity slices having storage characteristics of the respective physical storage devices from which the at least some of the capacity slices are derived; and assigning the one or more chunks to the node in the data storage system.
