The mobile communications terminal being arranged to communicate with the one or more base stations via the radio interface, the communicating including using an uplink random access channel of the radio interface to transmit random access messages to the one or more base stations and communicating user data via the uplink random access channel by transmitting one or more of the random access messages at a selected timing within the uplink random access channel, the timing being selected by the first mobile communications terminal to represent at least part of the user data.

A mobile communications terminal, comprising: a transceiver configured to transmit uplink random access channel (RACH) messages on a radio interface to a base station of a mobile communications network, the radio interface provided by the base station and the RACH messages identifying an uplink RACH of the radio interface; and circuitry configured to encode machine type communication (MTC) data within the uplink RACH by both preamble positioning within RACH resources and selecting a transmission timing for RACH messages within sub-frames of the uplink RACH, the encoded MTC data represented by the preamble position and the selected transmission timing, wherein the transceiver transmits the MTC data via the uplink RACH to the base station by transmitting the RACH messages according to the preamble position and the selected transmission timing.
