A controller for a touch surface, the controller comprising: output circuitry configured to generate drive waveforms for one or more of a plurality of drive electrodes on the touch surface, the drive waveforms including: a first periodic waveform having a first predetermined frequency, and at least one additional periodic waveform having an additional predetermined frequency different from the first predetermined frequency; and input circuitry operatively connected to one or more sense electrodes and configured to determine proximity of one or more objects by: measuring a capacitive coupling between the one or more drive electrodes and the one or more sense electrodes, and comparing the capacitive coupling resulting from the first periodic waveform with the capacitive coupling resulting from the at least one additional periodic waveform.
