A method for controlling an air conditioner 2 comprises performing a power state determination procedure comprising the steps of sending a first control signal that is not an on-off control signal using infrared transmission means of a control device 1, measuring sounds with a microphone of the control device, determining with electronic control and evaluation means of the control device whether an audio acknowledgment signal of the air conditioner is measured with the microphone subsequent to sending the first control signal, judging whether or not the air conditioner is in an off state, sending an off control signal, verifying that the AC has been turned off by sending one or more control signals and determining whether audio acknowledgment signals are subsequently measured and sending another off control signal if an acknowledgment signal is measured subsequent to one of the control signals. The method may further comprise performing a set-point temperature calibration procedure. A smart phone 4 may be used to enter desired AC settings, which are then sent by the smart phone to the controller. Also disclosed is a control device for performing the method. |
