SYNCHRONIZED PLAYBACK OF ALTERNATE CONTENT VERSION

Users can share a content stream and can create and/or edit playlists that include content items of the content stream. Each user device, or a subset of the user devices, can edit the playback commands of the content stream once it is being shared. Playback of the content items is synchronized between the sharing devices. If one device is associated with a content restriction, an alternate version may be provided to that device. The two versions can still be played synchronously with one another.

1. A method, comprising:
receiving, by a server computer, a playlist of content from a first client device of a plurality of client devices, the content including a first item having first playback properties, the first item corresponding to an alternate version with second playback properties; managing, by the server computer, synchronous playback of items of the content between the first client device and one or more other client devices of the plurality of client devices; in response to a second client device of the plurality of client devices accepting an offer to share the playlist, maintaining a playback state of the content; instructing the plurality of client devices regarding a first start time of a first clock for beginning synchronous playback of the content to be streamed from the server based at least in part on the playback state; receiving data, from the second user device, that identifies a request for the alternate version; revising the second playback properties of the alternate version to correspond with the first playback properties of the first item to enable the first item and the alternate item to be play synchronously by the first client device and the second client device; and when the first item is scheduled to be streamed to the plurality of devices:
providing first instructions to the first device to play the first item; andproviding second instructions to the second client device to play the alternate version with the revised second playback properties such that playback of the alternate version by the second client device will be synchronized with playback of the first item by the first client device.
