Phase change heat packs

A heat pack includes a housing, a first phase change material (PCM) that is contained in the housing, and a thermal storage buffer that is contained in the housing. The thermal storage buffer includes a second PCM. An initiator is in operative contact with the first PCM. Activation of the initiator causes crystallization of the first PCM, and the first PCM cooperates with the thermal storage buffer to provide heat at a predetermined temperature range upon crystallization of the first PCM.

1. A heat pack, comprising:
a housing; a first phase change material (PCM) that is contained in the housing, wherein the first PCM includes sodium acetate; a thermal storage buffer that is contained in the housing, wherein the thermal storage buffer includes a second PCM, wherein the thermal storage buffer is in a solution with the first PCM, and the solution includes 75-80% of the first PCM, 10-15% of the thermal storage buffer, and 5-10% water by weight; and an initiator in operative contact with the first PCM, wherein activation of the initiator causes crystallization of the first PCM, and the first PCM cooperates with the thermal storage buffer to provide heat at a predetermined temperature range upon crystallization of the first PCM, the predetermined temperature range is from 36 to 44 degrees Celsius the second PCM of the thermal storage buffer has a melting point within the predetermined temperature range.
