The power converter (1) has voltage intermediate circuit (6) for providing direct current (DC) voltage to half-bridge (3). A control circuit (11) is provided to control first and second power switches (8,9). The second power switch is switched when primary-side operating voltage deviates from desired value based on error signal from test element (29). A DC/DC converter (27) converts intermediate circuit voltage in secondary-side voltage supply into compensation power driver circuit (22) and additional circuit (25) upon failure of secondary-side operating voltage. An independent claim is included for a method for operating power converter.
