Provided is a mechanical seal configured so as to prevent the dislodgement of a cup gasket toward a low-pressure fluid side. The mechanical seal is configured in such a manner that: a rotation-side sliding ring 5 is formed in a substantially pentagonal cross-sectional shape and has a cut section 5a obtained by cutting a corner of the rotation-side sliding ring 5 into a tapered shape, the corner being located on the side opposite a sliding surface at a position on the inner diameter side of the rotation-side sliding ring 5; and a cup gasket 7 is installed bridging the inner diameter side and rear surface side of the rotation-side sliding ring 5, the cup gasket 7 being formed in a substantially L-shaped cross-sectional shape, the cup gasket 7 comprising an axial section 7a in contact with both the inner diameter side of the rotation-side sliding ring 5 and the inner cylinder section of a sleeve 2, the cup gasket 7 also comprising a radial section 7b in contact with both the rear surface side of the rotation-side sliding ring 5 and the radial section of the sleeve 2, a corner 7c of the cup gasket 7, which faces the cut section 5a, being formed in a shape that follows the shape of the cut section 5a, and the thickness of the corner 7c of the cup gasket 7 is set to be greater than the gap between the inner diameter side of the rotation-side sliding ring 5 and the inner cylinder section of the sleeve 2. |
