[Class 80 (ii).] Controlling-means for variable-speed gearing suitable for vehicles comprises a ratio-controlling fluid pressure actuated piston 70 which moves in a cylinder 71 until it reaches a definite position with a certain speed ratio in the variable gearing, not shown, whereupon an outlet 71m is uncovered through which the operating fluid is allowed to leak away subject to regulation by an operator-actuated valve 71i, which may be associated with the control means 74a of the engine throttle 75a. In the arrangement shown, oil from an engine-driven pump enters the cylinder 71 by way of a pipe 71a and acts on the control piston 70 against a spring 72 and against the speed gear reaction. In a low-speed position shown, a port 70a in the skirt of the piston 70 registers with an outlet 71b in the cylinder wall and thereby permits oil to leak idly past a set control valve 71d until the engine is accelerated. The piston then moves, closing the outlet 71b and raising the gear ratio until another port 71r in the piston skirt arrives in register with the outlet 71m in the cylinder leading to a pipe 71n leading to a port 71p into a second cylinder 71g. The sleeve valve 71i in the cylinder 71g is connected by a rod 75b to the accelerator pedal 74a, which operates the engine throttle 75a. In the valve sleeve 71i is a port 71k which at a certain accelerator pedal depression registers with the port 71p then allowing pressure oil in the pipe 71n to pass freely to the sump by a drain 71h. The parts may be set to allow this escape of oil through the drain 71h at any desired degree of throttling of the engine at 75a. The action of this control device is described in Specification 392,586.</p>
