The purpose of the present invention is to provide a magnetic recording medium wherein the Curie temperature (Tc) of a magnetic material is able to be decreased without increasing the in-plane coercivity and without causing deterioration of the magnetic characteristics. This magnetic recording medium comprises a substrate and a magnetic recording layer; and the magnetic recording layer contains an FePtRh ordered alloy. The Rh content in the FePtRh ordered alloy is 10 at% or less.
