An apparatus for orientating an axis of rotation which may be used as a steering apparatus for a vertical axis wind turbine or other applications. The apparatus has a steering member, orientable in response to changes in the direction of an externally applied force, a drive mechanism with a first rotor which rotates about its axis of rotation in response to changes in orientation of the steering member, a second rotor radially displaced from the vane axis of rotation, and a coupling which connects the first rotor to the second rotor to transmit rotational motion from the first rotor to the second rotor. A transmission mechanism is provided which has a rigid member coupled to the second rotor by a first crank arm, the rigid member being connected to a rotatable shaft by a rotatable crank arm to control the position of the rotatable shaft with respect to the direction of the externally applied force. |
