An apparatus, system and method for monitoring power to a communication device and switching operation modes. The system is monitored in order to detect a power interruption to the communication device. A first signal is supplied to the communication device to indicate the occurrence of a power interruption and/or activation of a backup power supply. The communication device is then switched to a low power mode which limits one or more operating functions.

1. A method comprising:
detecting a power interruption to at least one communication device; switching to a backup power supply for maintaining continuous operation of the at least one communication device; supplying a first signal to the at least one communication device upon detection of the power interruption, the first signal being indicative of the power interruption and/or activation of the backup power supply; switching, by the at least one communication device, from a normal operation mode to a low power mode; and limiting one or more functions of the at least one communication device while in the low power mode.
