<p>A method of attenuating a molten thermoplastic polymer stream (38) into polymer fibers (48) for forming a non-woven fiber mat, and the non-woven fiber mat formed thereby. The method applying a fluid stream to a molten polymer stream (38), and inducing a cyclic pulsation in the fluid stream. The cyclic pulsation further comprises an oscillating flow of the fluid stream. The application of the fluid stream to the molten polymer stream causes the attenuation of the molten polymer stream into a plurality of fibers which are collected into a receiving surface thereby forming a nonwoven fiber mat. The fluid stream may be comprised of a primary fluid flow having a first stream (34) and a second stream (36). The invention further comprises a model to predict the thermal and mechanical behavior of a polymer stream after it exits a melt blowing die (32).</p> |
