Detecting spherical images

Implementations relate to detecting spherical images. In some implementations, a computer-executed method includes obtaining an image, examining at least one characteristic of the image, and determining that the image is a spherical image based on the at least one examined characteristic. The method modifies metadata associated with the image to designate the image for spherical display.

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:
obtaining an image; examining at least one characteristic of the image; determining whether the at least one examined characteristic satisfies one or more particular criteria that indicate that the image has a spherical image type; and in response to determining that the at least one examined characteristic satisfies the one or more particular criteria, modifying metadata associated with the image to indicate that the image has the spherical image type and to indicate that the image has image content formatted for spherical display by one or more display devices.
