A method of making an article for magnetic heat exchange by forming a mixture comprising a poly-alkylene carbonate binder and powder which has a magneto-calorically active phase with a NaZn13-type crystal structure or powder comprising elements in amounts suitable to produce such a phase, forming a brown body from the mixture, removing the binder from the brown body to produce a green body, and sintering the green body to produce the article. The poly-alkylene carbonate can be poly-ethylene carbonate, poly-propylene carbonate, poly-butylene carbonate or poly-cyclohexene carbonate and comprise 0.1-10 % by weight of the mixture. The binder can be removed by heating the brown body to a temperature below 400 0C for 0-5-20 hours in a noble gas or hydrogen-containing atmosphere or vacuum. The green body can be sintered at a temperature in the range 900-1200 0C in a noble gas or hydrogen-containing atmosphere or vacuum. |
