Improvements in and relating to the manufacture of boiler and steam pipe lagging

A composition for lagging steam pipes and the like comprises sludge from paper manufacture, kieselguhr, asbestos fibre, cork dust, or aluminium powder, aluminium sulphate, and common salt. Cork dust is used for a low temperature lagging and aluminium powder for a high temperature lagging. The sludge is dried and mixed with the other ingredients to form a dry powder which is made into a sludge with water and applied to the steam pipes &c. A typical paper sludge consists mainly of calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate and carbon. In an example a composition comprises 180 parts of dried sludge, 10 parts of aluminium sulphate, 10 parts of salt, 7 1/2 parts of kieselguhr, 1 part of asbestos fibre and 5 parts of cork or 1/2 part of aluminium powder.
