The invention relates to a method for locating a mobile machine relative to an electronic map stored in the form of a cartographic database (12), which comprises the following steps: constructing, by means of a sensor (2) provided on the mobile machine, a first descriptive surface representation (G1) of occupied or free areas in the environment of the mobile machine; constructing, from the cartographic database (12), a second descriptive surface representation (G2) of occupied or free areas of the electronic map; and determining the position (X) of the mobile machine by correlating the first surface representation (G1) with the second surface representation (G2).
