Chlorhydrins are separated from their crude solutions containing hydrochloric acid by neutralizing the acid with ammonia or ammonium salts of weak volatile acids, and then distilling off the chlorhydrin. Before the distillation, the neutralized solution may be saturated with ammonium chloride, and during the distillation any liberated acid may be neutralized by further addition of ammonia. After the removal of the chlorhydrin, ammonium chloride is crystallized, and the mother liquor may be evaporated to dryness and purified by extraction of the impurities by means of a solvent such as alcohol or by heating to insolubilize the impurities after which the salt is recrystallized.ALSO:Ammonium chloride is obtained by neutralizing with ammonia or an ammonium salt of a weak, volatile acid the reaction mixture containing chlorhydrin and hydrochloric acid which is produced by reaction of an olefine with chlorine and water, the chlorhydrin being then distilled off.
