Coefficient coding for transform units (TUs) during high efficiency video coding (HEVC), and similar standards, toward simplifying design while enhancing efficiency. Elements of the invention include either (1) subjecting TUs that are 4x4 or 8x8 horizontal or vertical to horizontal or vertical scanning and the remaining TUs, including the up-right diagonal 4x4 and 8x8 TUs, to 4x4 sub-block up-right diagonal scanning; or (2) subjecting both large TUs, and 4x4 and 8x8 TUs with 4x4 sub-block up-right diagonal scans to multi-level significance map encoding. |
