Fast inversion of MWD transient EM data excited by a pulse of an arbitrary shape

A system and method of estimating properties of a subsurface formation are described. The method includes transmitting an excitation current pulse into the formation, receiving an induced pulse used to generate input data, and performing an inversion on the input data using a lookup table based on a shape of the excitation current pulse to estimate the properties of the subsurface formation.

1. A method of estimating properties of a subsurface formation, the method comprising:
obtaining a first lookup table by using a first excitation current pulse transmitting a second excitation current pulse into the formation, the second excitation current pulse being a different shape of excitation current pulse than the first excitation current pulse; receiving an induced pulse used to generate input data; modifying the first lookup table to generate a second lookup table specific to the second excitation current pulse; performing an inversion on the input data using the second lookup table to estimate the properties of the subsurface formation; and performing geo-steering in the subsurface formation based on the properties.
