[Class 122 (v)] [See also Group XII] In a rotary-earth furnace in which the wall e carries a sealing element k which extends downwardly in a sealing medium o such as sand contained in a V-shaped channel in the hearth a, the element k is maintained at a relatively low temperature by the provision of a water jacket m, Fig. 1, or outwardly extending heat - radiating fins p, Fig. 2. The element is formed with an inwardly projecting portion h which fits into a recess f in the wall e and contacts with a layer j of asbestos, while at a higher level the element is bent outwardly away from the wall e to provide a space for the reception of heat insulating material l. The portion n of the element which actually extends into the sand o is slotted so that expansion may take place without setting up stress in the material. |
