A navigation system for a vehicle has a communication module 104 arranged to receive event information regarding a plurality of events associated with a location. A processor is arranged to determine whether any of the events could affect a user of the navigation system; and an output 108 arranged to inform the user of any determined events. The system may be combined with a GPS receiver 112. The events can relate to an obstacle, a security risk, a restricted area or a regulation and they may be ranked according to their severity or their dependence on a vehicle capability or the predetermined skill level of a driver. The events information may be uploaded by a person with local knowledge and they may have details such as date time, description, repeat incidence, impact level and a temporal dimension associated with the event. |
